Dumpster Rental Pricing in Michigan: What Drives Cost

What sets the price of a Michigan dumpster rental: size, days, included tons, overage, distance, and fees. Dated published examples and questions to ask.

Quick answer: A dumpster quote is a bundle: a container size, a set number of rental days, and a set number of tons, plus fees for anything beyond that. Michigan providers that publish rates show base prices from a few hundred dollars for small containers, with 2 to 3 tons included and overage charged per ton. Your final bill depends mostly on how much your debris weighs, how long you keep the container, how far it travels, and whether anything goes wrong on delivery or pickup. Compare quotes line by line, not by the headline price.

Why the advertised price is rarely the whole price

Most roll-off pricing works the same way. The base price covers delivery, pickup, a rental period, and disposal up to a weight allowance. Everything outside that allowance is billed separately. Two quotes with the same headline number can end up far apart once you load the container, because one includes more tons or more days than the other.

The figures below come from Michigan providers that post their rates online. They are examples only, recorded on October 10, 2026, from the providers' own pages. Prices change. Most of the published rates we found come from the Grand Rapids area, outside the eight counties this directory covers, and we are not recommending any of these providers. Use them to understand how quotes are built, then get current quotes for your address.

A few notes on reading this table. On Time does not show a date on its prices. Bin There Dump That's page showed a last-modified date of September 24, 2026. Bin There Dump That uses compact bins, and its 20 yard bin is listed at 11 feet long, about half the length of the 22 to 23 foot roll-offs most haulers use, so it is not a like-for-like comparison with a standard 20 yard roll-off. ASAP's Saginaw figure is a starting price for a standard roll-off without a stated size.

Many sites that rank for "dumpster rental" in Gratiot, Isabella, Midland, and nearby counties do not post prices at all, and it is not always clear from those pages whether the company runs its own trucks or arranges service through a local hauler. Countrywide Disposal's Alma page, for example, lists a 7 day standard rental and a typical 2 ton weight limit for a 20 yard container but no price. Budget Dumpster's Saginaw page states that price depends on your zip code. Expect to call or fill out a form.

What drives the price

1. Container size

Larger containers cost more, but the weight allowance does not grow as fast as the volume. At Bin There Dump That's Grand Rapids location, the 10 yard bin includes 2 tons and the 20 yard bin includes 3 tons. Do not size up "just in case" if your debris is heavy, because a larger container does not raise the weight allowance enough to cover dense material. See our guide to choosing a dumpster size.

2. Rental period and extra days

Quotes include a fixed number of days. In the examples above, that ranges from 3 to 7 days. After that, providers charge per day. On Time's published rate is $20 per extra day. If your project depends on a contractor's schedule or the weather, ask what an extra week costs before you book.

3. Included tonnage and overage

This is the line that surprises people most. Every published example above includes between 2 and 3 tons in the base price and charges $75 to $85 per ton above it. Ask whether overage is prorated (charged on the exact weight) or rounded up to the next full ton. Bin There Dump That states its overage is prorated.

4. Debris type

Heavy material such as concrete, dirt, and shingles uses up the weight allowance quickly. Republic Services notes on its 10 yard page that heavier materials can raise rental cost. Some providers price single-material loads separately, as On Time does with its shingles-only container. Tell the provider what you are loading so the quote matches.

5. Distance

Delivery and hauling to the landfill or transfer station are part of the price. Rural addresses farther from the hauler's yard or the disposal site can cost more. On Time says extra fees may vary depending on how far you are outside its service area. Bin There Dump That's Michiana location says fees may apply when travel exceeds 50 miles.

6. Trip, dry-run, and relocation fees

A dry-run fee is charged when the truck arrives and cannot deliver or pick up, for example because a car blocks the container or the gate is locked. ASAP lists a dry-run fee for a wasted trip. Ask about fees for moving the container on site, for swapping a full container for an empty one, and for an early pickup.

7. Overfilled or prohibited loads

ASAP lists charges to off-load a container that is overfilled or overweight into another container, and possible extra fees for prohibited items such as hazardous waste. Michigan landfills cannot take certain materials, including used oil, lead acid batteries, whole scrap tires, and most yard clippings, according to EGLE. Items like these either have to come out before pickup or will be billed as a surcharge.

8. Permits

If the container has to sit in the street, your municipality may require a permit, and the fee may or may not be included in the quote. Budget Dumpster's Saginaw page, for example, says street placement there requires an encroachment permit from the city. Ask who pulls the permit and who pays for it.

How to compare two quotes

Ask each provider to fill in the same set of numbers, then compare total cost for your realistic scenario rather than the base price:

  • Base price, container size, and outside dimensions
  • Days included and cost per extra day
  • Tons included and cost per ton over, prorated or rounded
  • Delivery, fuel, environmental, or distance fees
  • Dry-run, relocation, and swap fees
  • Surcharges by item (tires, appliances, mattresses, electronics)
  • Taxes and permit fees

Then estimate your weight. If you expect to go over, the quote with more included tons or a lower per-ton rate may be the cheaper one even with a higher base price. Get the final quote in writing, including the per-ton and per-day rates.

Questions to ask a provider

  1. What is the all-in price for my address, and what fees are not included?
  2. How many days and how many tons are included?
  3. What is your per-ton overage rate, and is it prorated?
  4. What does each extra day cost, and can I extend by phone?
  5. Do you charge a dry-run, relocation, or swap fee, and how much?
  6. Do you charge more for concrete, dirt, or shingles, or offer a separate price for clean loads?
  7. Which items are refused or surcharged, and what is each surcharge?
  8. Are you the hauler, or are you arranging service through another company?
  9. Will you send me the weight ticket from the disposal site with my invoice?
