Common questions
Should I rent a wheeled skid steer or a tracked loader?
Tracked loaders spread their weight over a larger area, so they have lower ground pressure, cross mud and soft soil without getting stuck as easily, and leave less rutting on lawns. Wheeled skid steers grip well on pavement, gravel and hard soil but can slip or dig in on soft ground.
What size mini excavator do I need?
Pick by how deep you need to dig. In one national rental fleet, the smallest machines (about 2,300 to 2,500 lb) dig 5 to 6 feet, mid-size machines (about 6,300 to 7,400 lb) dig 9 to 10 feet, and the largest compact models dig 13 to 15 feet.
Do I need to contact MISS DIG before digging?
Yes. Contact MISS DIG 811 at least 3 business days before any digging, whatever the size or depth of the project, and the service is free. If you are doing the work yourself, the call is your responsibility, and private lines such as those to a grill or sprinkler system are not marked.
Can equipment be delivered while frost laws are on?
In spring, seasonal weight restrictions (frost laws) limit heavy loads while moisture trapped under the pavement softens the roadbed. County road commissions and city public works departments set their own restrictions, so ask the rental yard how posted limits affect delivery.
